The series of events might seem unrealistic, but they are inspiring. The events describe the types of persons who could be bullied and the trauma they go through. But, would bullies actually read a novel such as this and be transformed? Probably not, however, people who are prone to do nothing in a bullying situation, might better understand and be spurred to action. The novel is well-written and easy to read. Highly recommended.

Why are kids so cruel, especially the tweens and teens? Is it parental failure, educational failure, or some quirk of genetics designed to weed out the weaklings and insure survival of the fittest? The first part of the book is difficult to read as we live the fate of Barbara, an overweight middle-schooler harassed badly by her classmates and so called friend. My heart went out to Barbara, who is so desperate for love and affection she continually submits herself to betrayal and abuse. As a society can we really expect kids to wait out these horrendous periods in their lives until they become adults?

I wish the book would have attempted to answer the first question why are some kids bullies? That would have been interesting and refreshing. As it is I'm probably not the target audience for this book and found it extremely difficult reading.

For some reason the first section takes place in 2000 and I'm always suspicious when an author picks a relatively modern specific time period. In this case I'm still mystified because the completely different next section takes place in 2011 and concerns a different character harassed by her boss, who is also a female. (I suppose the bully couldn't be a male due to the strict laws which now exist against sexual harassment).

I will admit that I just didn't 'get' this book. The lesbian undertone left me cold (I certainly don't have anything against them but it seemed so pointless), and unfortunately, the ending didn't make much sense to me either. I feel like I missed something. That being said, the writing and prose were excellent, so though I can't say I liked the book, I think it unfair to rate it too low, so I'm going to split the difference.
From the first pages of this novel it is apparent that Ms Barrow is a very good writer and she has conquered her craft.
There is a lovely balance on the tone that deals with Barbara's painful state of being it communicates the sadness, but it's not melodramatic. It uses a simple language that speaks directly into the heart of the reader but at the same she manages to keep her tone eloquent. It's easy to read but at the same time it is a pleasure to read. At several points as I was reading I was going one or two paragraphs back to experience again the wit, or the lively or the beautiful or whatever it was that the author infused her scene and captivated me.
This is a moral tale and wants to share with the reader the consequences of bullying. What the story urges is not just the usual 'stand up for yourself' but 'stand up to protect others', which is the noble bit. But fundamentally I saw the story as a commentary on friendship. The joy of friendship with its solidarity and its humour and the shared beers and the camping excursions on one hand. The lack of friendship which equates with isolation, despair, stigma and bullying. Even the romance between the two girls Nicola and Angela is as much about friendship and companionship as it is about erotic feeling.
By the way the romantic and erotic scenes were made fantastically well. They are not hardcore and they're neither Sappho's poetry. They are rather light breezy and warm moments with some humour injected.
I surely loved Nicola, the main character. All round charming thing. And she gets into lots of trouble in this story. But she is a clever girl and she can go through! Angela was the epitome of class. Terry, a background character was supremely made as a nice guy. Zelda a well developed chilling creation.
But I wouldn't want to say more and spoil the fun!
Northern Heights is a LGBT romance that is mainly about two things, the relationship between the main Nicola and Angela and bullying. Just be warned it is a romance between two women, so if that isn’t your thing you might be put off by this book.

I have mix feelings about this book. The quality of the writing is generally pretty high, which makes this an easier read than many of the books I have reviewed. Chapters generally flow from one to the other, except from the first to second chapter, which I will get to in a moment, the dialogue feels natural, and the pacing is pretty good. From a technical standpoint, this is a solid novel.

While the story itself is decent, with both the relationship aspects and the message about bullying working in their own right and together, I did have a few issues. The time jump between the first and second chapter threw me. I get why the first chapter is there, but when the point of view shifted it threw me. The jump kept me from connecting with Nicola as a character right away because I had already started to connect with Barbara. I do wish there had been a way to keep this story thread, but also keep the focus on Nicola the entire book.

I also had a few issues with the “villain” of the book being a bit two-dimensional, but that doesn’t really detract from the story overall. The book also feels very “English” to me, and a couple of times I had trouble relating to the scene I was reading because it was outside of my experience as an American. That however is a minor gripe and most probably will not notice or care about it.
It is clear however that bullying is a very personal and important topic for Helen and you can feel that in the story.

Overall a well written book with a specific message. Not something you see every day.
